For the second time we had the pleasure of hosting under the new name our Oxygen WeekendTenerife (formerly known as Launch48). Here’s a roundup of the highlights of the event.
Oxygen Weekend guests arrived to a pizza and beer welcome in the wonderful Santa Cruz at our venue with a view the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce aims to support and help grow the startup community not only in Santa Cruz, but across Tenerife.
We had 10 pitches from our audience, all of which were pitched in Spanish – thanks to our local organiser Oliver for translating!
10 ideas were narrowed down through voting and a series of Q&As with four ideas selected to be worked on, with our entrepreneurs then picking their teams for the weekend.
Teams arrived bright and early for Ant’s Lean Startup and Idea Mapping workshop. For probably only the second time in history (after our first Tenerife event last year) the idea of a badly designed toilet was spoken about in Spanish!
In the afternoon we were lucky to be joined by Rory Otterburn from Microsoft UK who we are welcoming into the Oxygen team as a future weekend facilitator and Paco Martin one of Tenerife’s leading App developers. Both, gave the startups a grilling on their ideas using the tried and tested idea maps. Whilst Ant worked with the teams to give them access to some of the offers from our amazing sponsors such as Interoute offering each team access to the VDC JumpStartup Package & VDC One month Trial and free domains from Domain.ME with further support from Twilio.
Teams Get Cracking
The four startups worked on over the weekend were:
Cuvicer – An internationally approved digital certification for the diplomas and achievements of your curriculum vitae.
Moovit.me - A gamified social network for meeting people out and about – click here for more.
I found U (Smart Trails) – An app that uses beacons to send geolocated push notifications to users.
Homeshares – A platform that allows for people to co-invest in a house like in shares for a company.
After a series of 1:1s for the startups run by Lidia Chiena a personnel english trainer from Questidiomas to help them practice their pitches in English – the 4 teams took to the stage to wow the judges with their creations from the last two days.
Our judging panel pondered carefully over their decisions: Steve Purves, a local developer who runs the Tenerife Tech Biz meetup group, and Juanjo Reyes from Altavista Ventures again Rory Otterburn from Microsoft UK.
And the winner was…
As part of winning the Oxygen Weekend Homeshares have won six months of free office space in Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Tenerife, three month of Pro Account from Videolean, Altavista Ventures providing advice on business model analysis and financing. Free membership to the LaLaguna Valley community and a fast track to Olympo Boxes accelerator program!
