We had a great time hosting our first Tenerife Launch48 event this month. Here’s a round up of the highlights of the event.
Launch48 guests arrived to a pizza and beer welcome at our amazing venue with the futuristic FIT Canarias – the ‘Factoría de Innovación Turística’ de Canarias on the island. FIT focuses on creating and incubating the latest ideas designed to help improve the tourism industry.
We had a fantastic 16 pitches from our audience, most of which were in Spanish – thanks to Zulay from Why Tenerife for translating for us!
16 ideas were narrowed down through voting, and 3 ideas were selected to be worked on, with our entrepreneurs then picking their teams for the weekend.
Teams arrived bright and early for Si’s Lean Startup workshop. Ever heard a badly designed toilet being talked about in Spanish?
We were lucky to be joined by Theo and Raid from Interoute, as well as Steve Purves, a local developer who runs the Tenerife Tech Biz meet up group. All three, plus our Oxygen team gave the startups a grilling on their ideas using the tried and tested idea maps. The Interoute team also offered a great opportunity for teams to get access to the Interoute VDC JumpStartup Package. A big thank you too to domain.me and Ayuntamiento de Adeje for supporting the event.
Teams get cracking
The three startups worked on over the weekend were:
SunBik – A way to get more people cycling on the island, initially creating an app to get instant bike hire, but eventually with ambitions for Tenerife’s own Boris Bike scheme
Experiencefor.me – Ever been on holiday and wished you could take part in an authentic local experience, rather than what all the tourists do? This team believed that ‘the people make the place’, and so started creating a platform to match local experience hosts with travellers, including an AirBnB style accommodation option. (This team were almost revenue generating, as the Oxygen team volunteered to try local cheese making but sadly our cheese dreams were scuppered as it wasn’t open on a Sunday.)
Arquirutas – Offering guided city tours by architects, enabling tourists to visit places that are not usually open to the public, giving them a new way to discover cultural heritage.
Teams took time to refuel with some delicious local paella.
They got a fast-paced pitch-training session from Simon Jenner.
And then they cracked on with business models, landing pages, prototypes, marketing and presentation rehearsals for the final few hours before all-important pitch time.
The 3 teams took to the stage to wow the judges with their creations from the last two days.
Our judging panel pondered carefully over their decisions: Tanausu Cerdeña, Carmen de Miguel from FIT Canarias, Zulay Rodriguez from Why Tenerife, and Tanja Ovaska and Miguel de Vega; our Tenerife City Organisers.
And the winner was…
Eliana Bautista: “@Elibaupri: Thanks to the Oxygen team for an amazing weekend accelerating startups. Awesome people and awesome ideas!”
Oliver Gonzalez: “On Monday after the weekend I was so excited and inspired that I decided to launch my idea. Here’s the first landing page: http://www.1tohear.me”
Thanks for great weekend Tenerife entrepreneurs! We’re looking to return for another edition in February 2015.
In the mean time if you’d like to attend a Launch48 weekend, make sure you’re signed up to our Oxygen newsletter to get the latest updates.
